CAN AN OBJECT HAVE A SOUL?
In Japan, there is an ancient belief that after 100 years, everyday objects can acquire a spirit. They are called tsukumogami.
Ordinary things like furniture, umbrellas, sandals, pots and pans.
If they are cared for long enough, it is said they come to life.
Not because they are magical.
But because they have lasted.
The idea of tsukumogami comes from a time when possessions were rare and nothing was thrown away lightly.
People lived alongside the same tools, year after year, until it was hard to tell where the object ended and the owner began.
When something stayed that long, it was treated with a kind of respect. It had earned it.
Even now, there are some things in our lives that feel different.
We feel a kind of loyalty to them.
Not because they move. Not because they breathe. But because they made it this far.
Just like us.
Make some memories,
